Winterland at Heartwood Preserve

Winterland at Heartwood Preserve has quickly become one of Omaha’s most popular seasonal attractions. Back for its second year, this free community rink offers skating, skate rentals, and skate aids at no cost, making it an easy and accessible option for families. Winterland is open through February 1, and advance registration is strongly recommended since walk-up availability is limited.

RiverFront Outdoor Ice Skating Ribbon

The RiverFront Outdoor Ice Skating Ribbon in downtown Omaha offers a scenic skating experience surrounded by city lights and river views. Skating is free if you bring your own skates, while rentals are available for $5 for adults and $4 for kids. Hours vary based on weather, so it’s best to check the schedule before heading out.

UNMC Outdoor Ice Skating Rink

The UNMC Outdoor Ice Skating Rink near 39th and Jones is a longtime winter favorite in Omaha. Open from December 12 through February 22, this rink offers an affordable, no-frills outdoor skating experience. Admission is just $5 and includes skate rental, making it a great option for a spontaneous winter outing.

Mahoney State Park Ice Skating

Located just outside Omaha in Ashland, Mahoney State Park offers a full winter experience that includes ice skating, sledding, cross-country skiing, and other seasonal activities. A new ice skating facility is expected to open mid-December, but weather conditions can affect availability, so checking ahead is recommended. A state park permit is required.

Motto Ice Plex (Motto McLean Ice Arena)

Operated by Omaha Parks and Recreation, Motto Ice Plex is a budget-friendly indoor skating option. Public skating is $5 for ages six and older, free for younger children with a paid adult, and skate rentals are just $2. The rink also hosts preschool skate sessions, family skates, and holiday-themed events throughout winter break.

Moylan Iceplex

Moylan Iceplex
offers consistent indoor skating with a fun atmosphere. Admission includes skate rental, and Saturday nights feature popular “party lights” skate sessions. It’s a great option for families looking for an energetic indoor experience during colder days.

Grover Ice

Located in midtown Omaha, Grover Ice is a dependable year-round indoor rink. With frequent public skate times and affordable pricing for kids, adults, and seniors, it’s an excellent option for skaters of all skill levels.

Baxter Arena – Holland Ice

For those looking to skate in a professional arena setting, Baxter Arena’s Holland Ice offers select public skating sessions. Availability depends on hockey and figure skating schedules, so checking the calendar ahead of time is essential.


Pickleball During Winter Break in Omaha

Pickleball continues to grow in popularity across Omaha, and winter break is a great time to play indoors at Hanscom Indoor Tennis Center. (3220 Ed Creighton Ave)

Youth pickleball clinics on December 22 and December 29 are designed for kids ages 8–13. These sessions focus on fundamentals, skill-building, and fun gameplay in a supportive environment. The cost is $20 per child, per session.

The Home for the Holidays Tournament takes place on December 27 and features round-robin play followed by a single-elimination tournament. Divisions include 3.0 and under, 3.0–3.5, and 3.5+ players, making it a great option for competitive pickleball players during winter break.

For casual play, Hanscom offers drop-in pickleball sessions for beginners, families, and adults 55+, with staff available to assist. Players can also reserve a court for their own group for $20 per hour by calling 402-444-4078.

The Winter Pickleball Tournament will be held January 3–4 at Hanscom Indoor Tennis Center. Saturday features Men’s and Women’s Doubles, while Sunday is dedicated to Mixed Doubles.
