10 Questions to Ask Your Partner BEFORE House Hunting!

by Jennifer Weikel

Buying a home together is an exciting milestone for many couples. But buying a home with a partner can come with its challenges, especially if you’re not on the same page from the beginning. Small miscommunications can lead to frustration, arguments, and even regrets down the line.

There’s an easy way to avoid all of that, though! To set yourselves up for success, take some time to sit down together and answer these 10 important questions:

1 - Do we see this as our forever home or a starter home?

2 - What are our must-haves and nice-to-haves in a home?

3 - Are we open to buying a fixer-upper? If so, how much work are we willing to do?

4 - How do we expect our finances to change in the next 5–10 years?

5 - How involved will our parents or family members be in this process?

6 - What life changes do we anticipate over the next 5–10 years?

7 - Can we comfortably make our mortgage payment if one of us loses our job?

8 - What percentage of our income are we comfortable spending on a mortgage?

9 - How much outdoor space do we want, and are we ready to maintain it?

10 - What’s our ideal timeline for buying a home?

If you’re not married, here are two additional questions you’ll want to get clear on before you start searching for a home:

1 - What would happen to the house if we were to break up?

2 - Do we need a legal agreement for the house, or are we comfortable with a verbal one?

While these questions may feel a bit serious, tackling them before you start your search will save you time and stress as you go through the homebuying process.
